Best Indian Food in Town, Chana's Restaurant!

Muslim brothers and sisters simply dedicate Ramadan month to fasting. It doesn't matter whether you are a devoted Muslim or not, we all try to stick to the mission. Despite the historical events, we all try to discipline ourselves at least for this month. Some people refrain from profanity, some from alcohol, some try to pray during this month, some try to be more compassionate, and the list goes on. It is safe to say that all Muslims are a bit holier than thou this month!

I try my best to do the basics right so that it won't be a seriously uphill task even for me. I start by refraining from food and drinks from 4.30 am to 6.22 pm (I still get my Iftar times from the Islamic Calendar, yes, I'm old school like that!). Then I stay away from profanity and alcohol. Then I try to include Tarawih prayers during the night so that I can focus on my inner peace. I try to be a bit more compassionate and giving during this month so that I get to share what I have. Lastly, considering the limited time, I try to hang out with my friends and have good food!

On the 3rd day of Ramadan, my good friend Fiyaz Naufer, Thevuni, and I decided to meet for Iftar. This has been our little custom over the years, where we try to meet at least once during the month of Ramadan, plus how can we maintain friendships if we don't have a great time? Considering the options, we went back and forth, but finally, we decided to meet at Chana's Restaurant in Wellawatta.

I have to say that was my first time dining at the place because most Indian restaurants lie about their authenticity. Well, I was pleasantly surprised at Chana's with the food it had to offer. We first ordered Kanji and dates considering Thevuni's appetite. Afterward, Dhahi puri as starters, and the naan, parotta, beef masala, dhal curry, chutney, and chicken biriyani as mains. What can I say? The food was exceptional! A definite foodie's delight! It had the right balance of being spicy and spiced. These food options were billed under 6,000 rupees, which I thought was very reasonable considering the economic depression.

The Kanji vanished in 45 seconds even before Thevuni could take a picture of it, and she was generous enough to hand her portion for the photo. The chicken biriyani was exquisite! For a moment, I forgot that it was chicken biriyani. Over the years, I've had my fair share of chicken biriyani but nothing like an authentic Indian chicken biriyani. The entire meal at Chana's was simply delicious. I must mention that the beef and the chicken were well marinated with spices that provide a blissful explosion in my mouth with its Indian masala flavor complimenting the meat.

One of the best things about Chana's Indian restaurant is Sathya's (the person who served us) customer service, which was impressive. He was courteous, pleasant, and quick! What more can you ask for? When you are at Chana's don't forget to say hello to Sathya, he is simply a customer's delight!

Chana's attempt to serve delicious Indian Food in Sri Lanka is a fantastic effort and one of the best I tried in Colombo. Let me know what you think, agree, or agree to disagree!
